Turner bitten by historic bug
Racing at Snetterton this weekend
When Darren Turner made his first appearance at the Goodwood Revival in 2009 he was well and truly bitten by the historic racing bug. This weekend he swops the 600+ horsepower in the Aston Martin DBR9 GT1 car for a rather more sedate 100 horsepower in his very own historic car.
“After doing the Revival in 2009 I fell in love with the historic racing scene,” explained Darren. “I really enjoyed racing the Mini and the Cobra but cars like that are a bit out of my price range so when the opportunity came up to buy this car with a friend of mine I jumped at the chance.”
Along with his good friend, James Turner (no relation), Darren bought a 1959 Ford Zodiac Mk2, which he will race for the first time this weekend at Snetterton.
“I drove the Zodiac at a Silverstone track day in the summer and I loved it,” said Darren. “It’s pretty docile compared to a modern car and it is relatively slow on the straights but that just gives you more time to look around!”
James, who races on novice plates, will take the wheel for the practice sessions on Friday in order to make the most of the track time. Darren will jump in for qualifying on Saturday morning before the pair of them share the driving duties in Saturday afternoon’s 45-minute HRDC ‘Touring Greats’ race.
