Darren to race at GC600

Darren Turner will join the ranks of international drivers racing in the Armor All Gold Coast 600 event at Surfer’s Paradise in Australia this weekend after a late call up to race the No.1 Toll Holden Racing Team car, alongside current V8 Supercar Champion James Courtney.  It is going to be a difficult and emotional event for Turner as he will be racing in place of Dan Wheldon, who was tragically killed in last weekend’s IndyCar race in Las Vegas.

“For the first time in my life I have to say I would rather be at home watching this race on television, watching Dan drive the No.1 car,” said Turner. “It’s very hard to describe how I feel. I didn’t know which seat I would be in until I landed in Australia and now I know it is Dan’s, I will do everything I can to do the great job that we all know he would have done, for Dan and his family.”

Darren will join the other members of the British Racing Driver’s Club competing this weekend – Andy Priaulx, Oliver Gavin, Marino Franchitti and Richard Westbrook – in wearing a black armband and Dan Wheldon’s name on his helmet throughout the event.

“It’s going to be a difficult weekend for everyone,” he continued. “Many of the guys here knew him well and he will be in our thoughts all weekend.  We’ll all be racing with Dan in our hearts.”
