2005 SETTING OFF FOR SEBRING [ALMS]

With just weeks to go before the beautiful Aston Martin DBR9 takes the green flag for the 12 Hours of Sebring, the only Briton in the team’s international driver line up is both excited and honoured to be involved in the prestigious marque’s return to GT racing.

The Florida endurance classic on the 19th March will be the first in a selected programme of sportscar races for Aston Martin Racing in both the US and Europe, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.  Darren Turner is an important element of the team, having been involved with the testing and development of the DBR9 since it first turned a wheel in November.

“I’m really pleased to be part of Aston Martin Racing and to be driving the DBR9 at the highest level of GT racing.  I feel very comfortable with the team as well as my fellow drivers, many of whom I’ve worked with before.  While the programme is still is its early stages, I know we have what it takes to be able to not only compete with but also beat the likes of Corvette, Ferrari and Maserati.”

Aston Martin Racing’s team principal, George Howard-Chappell, expanded upon the Oxfordshire-based driver’s place in the team.  “We got to know Darren through his involvement with the Care Racing Ferrari 550s we raced in 2003, and it was very obvious that he not only fitted in extremely well with the team and the way in which we work, but was also capable of winning races.

“He has a very professional approach to testing and racing, and is also good fun to have around.  He gets on well with everyone in the team, and I know he will give everything he has to get the best from the DBR9.”

Aside from his duties with Aston Martin Racing, Darren continues his association with the McLaren F1 team and has recently been investigating the possibility of ad hoc races in other series such as the World Touring Car Championship and the Australian V8 Supercar Championship.

During the winter months Darren has been working towards gaining his private pilot’s licence and is now just a few hours of flying time short of achieving that long-held personal goal.
