GOODWOOD FESTIVAL AWARD FOR DARREN
09/07/2006
After spending a fantastic three days at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Darren was on Sunday awarded the Veuve Clicquot Most Thrilling Driver gong for his performance on the infamous 1.16 mile hillclimb. As Darren had already left Goodwood by the time of the prize-giving, Allan McNish accepted the award from Dan Gurney on his behalf.
In previous years a star performer in McLaren F1 cars, Darren proved just as spectacular with a series of very smoky burnouts in the beautiful Aston Martin DBR9 GT1 car which was entered in the post 1980 Modern Endurance Cars category. "You cannot have anything but fun at this event,” said Turner. “It’s great being here. At most races you fly in with your team and fly out, but this is a great chance to catch up with friends you only see once or twice a year and spend some time talking to people.
“We only go up the hill twice a day and I try to make it as much fun for the spectators as possible. If you just whizz up fast they don’t see much of the car, so I stop and do a bit of a burnout at two different places up the hill and a doughnut or two in the collecting area and turning area at the top of the hill. There are about five different places where you can stop and do this up the hill, so I varied them each time so everyone got to see a bit more of the car and enjoy the fun.
“Our senior Data Engineer, Alistair Grimshaw (known to all as Ali G), was running the car this weekend with a small number of people from the team, and they all had a brilliant time. Each time I had to go to the collecting area before our runs up the hill, or back down the hill to the paddock after the run, I took one of the Aston Martin Racing team members with me in the car. It’s not something they would normally get the chance to do – ride in the car – so it was great to be able to do that for them too."
Darren now heads back to the USA for the next two rounds of the American Le Mans Series, the first of which is at the new Miller Motorsports Park facility in Salt Lake City, Utah on 15th July.
Darren, 34, lives near Banbury in Oxfordshire. Successful in many different categories of motorsport, his most notable and high profile victories have been at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the British Touring Car Championship. He's a firm favourite with teams, fans, and media alike from around the world.
